English speakers often try to use 'the' as a separate word. In Bulgarian, it must be a suffix attached to the end of the word.

Wrong: The град е голям.

When using an adjective with a masculine noun, the article suffix changes slightly to -ият/-ия.

The article cannot stay on the noun if an adjective comes before it. It must jump to the adjective.
