Aspect controls the 'camera' of your story: Perfective for action cuts, Imperfective for steady background shots.
- Use Perfective (Свършен) for a sequence of completed events: 'Той влезе, седна и заговори.'
- Use Imperfective (Несвършен) for background states or simultaneous actions: 'Валеше дъжд, докато той чакаше.'
- Switch aspect to signal 'interruption': 'Четях (Imp.), когато телефонът извъня (Perf.).'

Meanings
Aspect in Bulgarian is a grammatical category that indicates whether an action is viewed as a completed whole (Perfective) or as a process/habit (Imperfective). In narratives, this distinction creates a foreground-background contrast.
Sequential Action
Using Perfective verbs to list actions that happen one after another.
“Той стана, облече се и излезе.”
Backgrounding
Using Imperfective verbs to describe the environment or ongoing state while the main action occurs.
“Хората говореха оживено в залата.”
Iterative Narrative
Using Imperfective verbs to describe habits or repeated actions within a past narrative context.
“Всяка сутрин той пиеше кафе на терасата.”

Smart Tips
Always look for an Imperfective verb. 'While' implies a process, not a sudden cut.
Keep the aspect consistent. If they are steps in a sequence, make them all Perfective.
Use Imperfective verbs for everything that isn't moving. The trees, the sky, the feelings—these are all background.

Technically yes, but only in subordinate clauses (like after 'да') or for future meaning. You cannot say 'Аз напиша' to mean 'I am writing right now'.
There is no single rule, but `на-` is the most common. You must learn the aspectual pairs as individual vocabulary items.
No. You can have an Imperfective Aorist (e.g., `мислих` - I thought for a while). It shows an action that happened in the past but doesn't emphasize a specific result.
This is the 'Historical Present.' It makes the story feel more vivid and immediate, like it's happening right now.
It's a verb that was made Perfective with a prefix, then made Imperfective again with a suffix (e.g., `пиша` -> `напиша` -> `написвам`). It's used for repeated completed actions.
English has 'Progressive' aspect (be + -ing), but it doesn't have the systematic Perfective/Imperfective pair system that Slavic languages have.

In Other Languages
Pretérito Indefinido vs. Imperfecto
Bulgarian aspect is a property of the verb itself, while in Spanish it is tied strictly to the tense conjugation.
Passé Composé vs. Imparfait
French uses auxiliary verbs (avoir/être) for completion, whereas Bulgarian uses prefixes.
Präteritum vs. Perfekt (not aspectual)
German speakers must learn to 'see' aspect as a mandatory grammatical category in Bulgarian.
Te-iru form
Japanese aspect is more about the state/result, while Bulgarian is about the narrative boundary of the action.
Madi (Perfective) vs. Mudari (Imperfective)
In Arabic, this distinction is the primary way to show time, whereas in Bulgarian, aspect and tense work together.
