Old English 'lyft' (weak, foolish), Proto-Germanic '*luftuz' (left, weak). The sense of 'left hand' developed from the idea of the weaker or less skilled hand, as opposed to the 'right' hand which was associated with strength and skill. Cognate with Old Frisian 'lift', Middle Dutch 'luchter', Low German 'lüchter'. The nautical use of 'port' to mean left began in the 17th century to avoid confusion with 'starboard' (right).
