Finns have a 'pakkasraja' (frost limit) for different activities. For example, schools might cancel outdoor sports if it's below -15°C, but children still play outside during recess. The Sami people have over 300 words for snow and ice, many of which describe the specific type of 'pakkanen' and how it affects the reindeer's ability to find food under the snow. Old wooden houses are designed to breathe, but 'paukkuva pakkanen' can cause the wood to shrink and crack loudly, which is a nostalgic winter sound for many Finns. In cities like Helsinki, 'pakkanen' combined with sea wind feels much colder than the 'dry' frost of Lapland. This is often discussed as 'pureva pakkanen' (biting frost).
