पेंटर चाहिए

You use this phrase to express a requirement. You can say it to a neighbor or a contractor. You can even write it on a sign. Just add the location or the object if you want. For example, घर के लिए पेंटर चाहिए (Need a painter for the house). It is a 'subject + chahiye' construction. It is one of the most useful patterns in Hindi.

Use it when you are moving into a new flat. Use it before the festival of Diwali. In India, everyone paints their homes before Diwali! It is also great for local WhatsApp groups. If you are at a hardware store, ask the shopkeeper this. They always have a list of reliable painters. It works perfectly in professional and casual settings.

Do not use this for an artist who paints portraits. For an artist, we usually use the word कलाकार (Kalakaar). Using पेंटर (Painter) specifically implies a house painter or laborer. Don't use it if you are looking for a makeup artist either. Also, avoid using it in a very demanding tone. Adding a 'please' or जी (Ji) makes it sound much better.

In India, painting a house is a ritual. It signifies a fresh start or a big celebration. Most people hire 'thekedars' (contractors) who bring their own team. You will often see hand-painted signs on city walls. These signs say पेंटर चाहिए or provide a painter's number. It is a very grassroots way of finding work. If you want to be more polite, say एक पेंटर की ज़रूरत है (There is a need for a painter). This sounds a bit more formal. But for daily life, the original phrase is king.
