Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Swedish nouns use suffixes instead of standalone words to show definiteness, and they must match the noun's gender (en or ett).

  • En-words take -en: en bil (a car) -> bilen (the car).
  • Ett-words take -et: ett hus (a house) -> huset (the house).
  • Plural nouns take -na: bilarna (the cars) or -en: husen (the houses).
Noun + Suffix = Definite Noun (e.g., Bil + en = Bilen)

Meanings

Swedish uses suffixes attached to the end of nouns to indicate whether they are definite (the) or indefinite (a/an).

1

Indefinite singular

Referring to a non-specific item.

“Jag har en bok.”

“Det finns ett bord.”

2

Definite singular

Referring to a specific, known item.

“Boken är bra.”

“Huset är stort.”

3

Definite plural

Referring to specific items in plural.

“Böckerna är gamla.”

“Husena är fina.”
