Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use the 'ber-an' prefix-suffix combo to show that two or more people are doing an action to each other.

  • Add 'ber-' and '-an' to the root verb: 'pukul' (hit) becomes 'berpukulan' (hitting each other).
  • Use this for actions involving two or more parties: 'Mereka bersalaman' (They shook hands).
  • Do not add an object after these verbs: 'Mereka berpelukan' (They hugged), not 'Mereka berpelukan dia'.
ber- + [root verb] + -an = Reciprocal Action
