窓を開ける

To use it, just say 窓を開ける. If you are being polite, say 窓を開けます. If you want to ask someone else to do it, say 窓を開けてください. It follows the standard Subject-Object-Verb pattern of Japanese. The particle を marks the window as the thing being opened. It is like pointing at the window and then doing the action.

Use this when the air feels heavy. Maybe you just finished cooking something strong like garlic. Or perhaps the office is getting a bit too warm. You can use it when you see something cool outside. "Look at that cat! 窓を開ける!" It is great for everyday life at home or work. You might even use it in a car if the AC is broken.

Do not use 開ける for things like a light switch. For lights, you use つける. Also, do not use it for starting a conversation. In English, we say "open a window of opportunity." In Japanese, this phrase is almost always physical. If you mean "opening" a store for the day, there are better words. Stick to actual glass windows for this one.

Japan loves ventilation, or 換気 (kanki). Even in winter, people often crack a window. It is considered healthy to keep air moving. During the pandemic, 換気 became a national obsession. You will see signs in shops saying they are opening windows regularly. It is a sign of being considerate to others. A closed, stuffy room is often seen as bad manners.

If the window is already open, you say 窓が開いている. If you want to close it, use 窓を閉める. Sometimes people use 換気する (to ventilate) instead. If you want to open it just a little, you say 少し窓を開ける. You can also say 窓を全開にする to open it all the way. It is a very flexible base for many daily needs.
