In villages, the 'Manji' (string cot) is more common than chairs. Offering a chair to a guest instead of a Manji can sometimes be seen as a sign of extreme formality or even a lack of intimacy. Inside the Darbar Sahib of a Gurdwara, everyone sits on the floor. Chairs are only provided at the back or outside for the elderly or infirm to maintain the principle of 'Sangat' (equality). The 'Baddi Kursi' (Big Chair) refers to the boss's position. Sitting in the boss's chair without permission is a major taboo in Punjabi office culture. It is considered rude to keep a guest standing. The phrase 'Kursi pesh karna' (offering a chair) is a synonym for showing respect.
