Past Hypotheticals
Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use the Past Conditional to talk about things that didn't happen in the past and the regrets or relief that followed.
- Form it with the conditional auxiliary of 'a fi' + the past participle: 'aș fi mers' (I would have gone).
- The auxiliary changes for person (aș, ai, ar, am, ați, ar), but 'fi' and the participle stay the same.
- In 'If' clauses, use 'Dacă' followed by the same past conditional form or the Pluperfect.
Overview
what if. It describes scenarios that never actually happened. You are looking back at the past. How This Grammar Works
dacă (if).If I had known, I would have come.In reality, you didn't know. So, you didn't come.
fi.unreal events. One event depended on the other. But the window of opportunity has closed.Formation Pattern
aș, ai, ar, am, ați, ar.
fi. This never changes. It stays fi for everyone.
mers, mâncat, or băut.
if clause, start with dacă.
dacă + auxiliary + fi + participle.
result clause, use the same: auxiliary + fi + participle.
Dacă aș fi știut (If I had known).
Aș fi venit (I would have come).
Dacă aș fi știut, aș fi venit.
nu before the auxiliary.
Dacă nu aș fi întârziat... (If I hadn't been late...).
When To Use It
If I had studied more, I would have passed.Use it to show relief about a lucky escape. "If I hadn't missed the bus, I would have been in the crash." Use it to criticize someone else's past choices.
This is very common in job interviews. You might explain what you would have done differently. If I had had more time, I would have finished the project." Use it when discussing history.
It is also useful for gossip. If she had seen him, she would have been angry.
It works for any scenario that is now impossible. Think of it as youralternate reality" button.
When Not To Use It
perfect compus. Don't say If I had goneif you actually went.
If I had money (now), I would buy this. That is a different structure.
If it rains tomorrow, I will stay home. That is the first conditional. This pattern is strictly for the
dead past.Common Mistakes
fi. Many learners say dacă aș știut. This is wrong and sounds very chopped. You must include fi every single time. It is the heart of the structure. Another mistake is using the wrong auxiliary. Some people use the future auxiliary by mistake. Remember, it is aș, not voi. Don't mix up am (we) and au (they). Actually, for they, the auxiliary is ar. This is a common trap for Spanish or Italian speakers. Another mistake is the double if logic. In English, we don't say If I would have known. But in Romanian, we DO say
Dacă aș fi știut. Both sides get the conditional form. This is a major difference from English. Don't let your English brain trick you here. Think of it like a grammar traffic light. Both sides must be green for the sentence to move.Contrast With Similar Patterns
Aș mânca means I would eat (now).
Aș fi mâncat means I would have eaten (then). The addition of
fi pushes the action back in time. Now, compare it to the Imperfect.Dacă știam, veneam. This is very common in the street. It translates to If I knew, I came.It is shorter and faster.
correct in formal writing. The past hypothetical is more elegant. It is like wearing a suit versus wearing pajamas.Mai mult ca perfect. That is for a past before another past.Quick FAQ

Try using the Past Conditional in BOTH parts of the sentence for a very balanced, formal sound.

Kulturelle Hinweise
Romanians are very expressive about regrets. Using the past conditional is seen as more polite and educated than the colloquial imperfect.
In some eastern dialects, the use of the imperfect for hypotheticals is even more dominant than in Bucharest.
Classic Romanian literature (Eminescu, Creangă) uses the past conditional to create a sense of longing (dor).
The Romanian conditional is a Romance innovation, replacing the Latin subjunctive in many contexts.
