Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use the Past Conditional to talk about things that didn't happen in the past and the regrets or relief that followed.
- Form it with the conditional auxiliary of 'a fi' + the past participle: 'aș fi mers' (I would have gone).
- The auxiliary changes for person (aș, ai, ar, am, ați, ar), but 'fi' and the participle stay the same.
- In 'If' clauses, use 'Dacă' followed by the same past conditional form or the Pluperfect.
Meanings

“Aș fi vrut să te văd înainte de plecare.”
“Ar fi fost mai bine să tăcem.”
Counterfactual Condition
Describing a hypothetical scenario in the past that is the opposite of what actually happened.
“Dacă m-ai fi ascultat, n-am fi fost în situația asta.”
“Dacă ar fi plouat, am fi rămas acasă.”
Past Possibility/Uncertainty
Speculating about something that might have happened, often in news or storytelling.
“Cine ar fi bănuit că el este vinovatul?”
“Ar fi putut fi un accident groaznic.”

نکات فرهنگی
Romanians are very expressive about regrets. Using the past conditional is seen as more polite and educated than the colloquial imperfect.
In some eastern dialects, the use of the imperfect for hypotheticals is even more dominant than in Bucharest.
Classic Romanian literature (Eminescu, Creangă) uses the past conditional to create a sense of longing (dor).
The Romanian conditional is a Romance innovation, replacing the Latin subjunctive in many contexts.
