Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use 'être' in the appropriate tense + the past participle to shift focus from the doer to the action.
- The auxiliary 'être' must match the tense of the active verb: 'Le gâteau a été mangé' (The cake was eaten).
- The past participle must agree in gender and number with the subject: 'Les fenêtres ont été fermées' (The windows were closed).
- The agent is introduced by 'par' or 'de': 'Il a été surpris par la nouvelle' (He was surprised by the news).
