Matalas na kutsilyo

In many Filipino households, knives are kept in a 'hasaan' (whetstone) area to ensure they are always 'matalas'. A sharp knife is essential for the daily task of mincing garlic. Batangas is famous for the 'Balisong'. While 'kutsilyo' is for the kitchen, the 'Balisong' is a cultural icon of craftsmanship and sharpness. The word 'kutsilyo' is one of thousands of Spanish loanwords. It shows how European kitchen tools were integrated into local life. In provinces, a 'bolo' (itak) is often used instead of a kitchen knife for heavy tasks like opening coconuts, but it must still be 'matalas'.
