Chunyu Kun was a diplomat and strategist during the Warring States period. In a conversation with King Xuan of Qi, he used this analogy to criticize the King's aggressive military policies. He argued that attacking other states to prevent future conflicts was like adding fuel (firewood) to a fire to extinguish it, which would inevitably lead to a larger blaze. Another significant reference is found in the 'Strategies of the Warring States' (戰國策 - Zhàn Guó Cè), where it is also used to illustrate the futility and counterproductiveness of certain actions. The core idea is that introducing more of the very element that is causing the problem (firewood to a fire) will only intensify the problem, rather than resolve it.
