B2 adverb

创新地

chuàng xīn de

When we talk about doing things innovatively in Chinese, we use the adverb 创新地 (chuàngxīndì).

It’s formed by combining 创新 (chuàngxīn), which means “to innovate” or “innovation,” with the structural particle 地 (de), which turns an adjective or a noun into an adverb.

So, literally, it means “innovative-ly,” and it describes the manner in which an action is performed.

You’ll often see it used with verbs like 开发 (kāifā, to develop), 设计 (shèjì, to design), or 解决 (jiějué, to solve), indicating that the development, design, or solution is done in a new and original way.

Wichtige Grammatik

The adverb '创新地' (chuàngxīndì) is typically placed before the verb it modifies. It describes how an action is performed.

他创新地解决了这个问题。(Tā chuàngxīndì jiějué le zhège wèntí.) - He innovatively solved this problem.

It can also be used before an adjective to emphasize that the quality is achieved in an innovative way.

这个设计创新地独特。(Zhège shèjì chuàngxīndì dúrè.) - This design is innovatively unique.

When '创新地' modifies a verb that already has an object, it usually precedes the verb-object phrase.

公司创新地开发了新产品。(Gōngsī chuàngxīndì kāifā le xīn chǎnpǐn.) - The company innovatively developed new products.

It can be used in a sentence structure to emphasize the manner of action: 'S + 创新地 + V + O'.

团队创新地提出了一个方案。(Tuánduì chuàngxīndì tíchū le yīgè fāng'àn.) - The team innovatively proposed a plan.

In more complex sentences, '创新地' can be part of a longer adverbial phrase, often appearing after the subject and before the main verb.

为了提高效率,他们创新地改变了工作流程。(Wèi le tígāo xiàolǜ, tāmen chuàngxīndì gǎibiàn le gōngzuò liúchéng.) - In order to improve efficiency, they innovatively changed the workflow.
