The Arabic 'wa' (و) is a prefix that attaches directly to the next word to mean 'and'.

¿Alguna vez has notado cómo los hablantes de árabe parecen hablar en una frase larga e interminable? No te lo imaginas, acabas de conocer el superpegamento lingüístico definitivo: wa (و). En español, y es un invitado educado que se queda solo entre palabras.
En árabe, wa es ese amigo pegajoso que se adhiere físicamente a la siguiente palabra. Es la partícula más común del idioma. Si puedes decir y, ya puedes construir frases árabes complejas.
Es la diferencia entre sonar como un robot (Como. Duermo.) y un humano (Como y duermo).

How This Grammar Works

Piensa en wa como un prefijo, no como una palabra separada. Nunca está sola. Siempre se apoya en la palabra que le sigue.
Gramaticalmente, funciona como una conjunción, uniendo sustantivos, verbos, adjetivos o frases enteras. Pero a diferencia del español, donde usamos comas para listas (A, B y C), al árabe le encanta repetir wa cada vez (A y B y C). Se siente rítmico.

¡Sí, puedes! En español, empezar con Y es controvertido. En árabe, es estándar. A menudo verás párrafos que comienzan con wa.

Common Mistakes

La Trampa de la Coma:
Los principiantes intentan traer reglas de puntuación al árabe. Dicen
hummus, falafel wa pita.
¡NO! Debes decir
