Subjunctive Stem Formation

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

The subjunctive stem is used for wishes, commands, and suggestions; it is formed by modifying the root verb's vowel patterns.

  • For most verbs, the second radical takes a short vowel (e.g., 'y-s-b-r' becomes 'y-s-b-r').
  • Negative forms use the prefix 'ay-' before the stem.
  • The stem changes based on the person (I, you, he, she, etc.) using specific prefixes.

Meanings

The subjunctive mood in Amharic expresses desire, command, suggestion, or necessity. It is essential for polite requests and indirect commands.

1

Jussive/Command

Used to give a command to a third person or a polite suggestion.

“ይሂድ (yihid - let him go)”

“እንብላ (inbila - let us eat)”

2

Purpose/Intent

Used after conjunctions like 'ende' (so that) to express purpose.

“እንዲበላ (indibela - so that he eats)”

“እንዲሄድ (indihed - so that he goes)”
