The 'Next Word' Rule

Always look at the noun immediately after the blank. Its gender is your only guide for choosing between чийто, чиято, and чието.
⚠️

Comma Alert

In Bulgarian, you MUST put a comma before 'чийто'. It's not optional like in some English contexts.
🎯

Avoid the Article

Don't put '-та' or '-то' on the noun after 'чийто'. Say 'чиято кола', not 'чиято колата'.
💬

Formal vs. Informal

If you're struggling with gender in a fast conversation, you can use 'на който' + possessive pronoun (на който колата му), but try to use 'чийто' for a better impression.

Smart Tips

Pause and look at the very next word. If it's feminine, change it to 'чиято' immediately.

Мъжът, чийто кола... Мъжът, чиято кола...

Replace 'на който' with 'чийто' to make your sentences tighter and more professional.

Don't overthink the gender. Just use 'чиито' for everything plural.

Хората, чиити/чиите деца... Хората, чиито деца...

Always check if it's a relative clause. If it is, it must have the '-то' ending.

Човекът, чия дъщеря е тук. Човекът, чиято дъщеря е тук.

FAQ (8)

No, it agrees with the thing that is owned. For example, if a man owns a car (feminine), you use `чиято`.

Yes, it is used for people, animals, and inanimate objects. For example: `кучето, чиято каишка е червена` (the dog whose leash is red).

It is neutral to formal. In very casual speech, people might use `на който`, but `чийто` is perfectly fine and preferred in writing.

The pronoun still agrees with the object. `Хората, чиято къща видяхме` (The people whose house we saw) — `къща` is singular, so `чиято` is used.

Yes, in Bulgarian, relative clauses starting with `чийто` are always preceded by a comma.

No, for questions use `чий`, `чия`, `чие`, or `чии`. `Чийто` is only for connecting sentences.

The plural form for all genders is `чиито`. There is no separate feminine plural.

Because `чиято` already acts as a determiner, making the noun specific. Adding the definite article `-та` is redundant and incorrect.
