Erreurs courantes

Te volim.

Volim te.

Clitics cannot start a sentence.

Daj meni knjigu.

Daj mi knjigu.

Using full forms for neutral requests sounds unnatural.

On vidi me.

On me vidi.

The clitic must move to the second position.

On je mi rekao.

On mi je rekao.

Dative clitics come before the auxiliary 'je'.

Ja sam se umio.

Umio sam se.

While 'Ja sam se umio' is correct, learners often fail to move clitics when the subject is dropped.

Vidiš li me?

Vidiš li me?

Learners often forget 'li' is a clitic too.

Rekao sam mu ga je.

On mu ga je rekao.

The auxiliary 'je' must be at the very end of the clitic cluster.

On ne ga vidi.

On ga ne vidi.

Actually, 'On ga ne vidi' is wrong. It should be 'On ga ne vidi'? No, 'Ne vidi ga' or 'On ga ne vidi'. The mistake is putting it between 'ne' and the verb.

Zaboravio sam ju.

Zaboravio sam je.

Using 'ju' instead of 'je' when there is no other 'je' nearby.

Mislim da, ako dođeš, ćeš ga vidjeti.

Mislim da ćeš ga, ako dođeš, vidjeti.

Clitics should follow the conjunction 'da' immediately if possible.

On mi se je javio.

On mi se javio.

In the past tense with 'se', the auxiliary 'je' is often omitted in 3rd person singular, but learners over-correct.

Daj mi ga!

Daj mi ga!

Learners struggle with clitic placement in long imperative chains.

⚠️

Comma Trap

Clitics cannot follow a comma if that comma starts a new clause. They must find the second position *within* that new clause.
💬

Politeness

Always use the clitic 'Vam' (Dative Vi) in business emails to sound professional without being overly stiff.

Smart Tips

Change the first 'je' (the pronoun) to 'ju'.

On je je vidio. On ju je vidio.

Immediately follow the verb with 'li'.

The clitic must follow the verb, not the 'ne'.

FAQ (6)

No, never in standard Croatian. You must either use the full form (`Njemu sam rekao`) or put the verb first (`Rekao sam mu`).

The clitic follows the whole phrase: `Moj najbolji prijatelj mi je pomogao.`

To avoid the repetition of the sound 'je', the accusative feminine clitic `je` changes to `ju` when next to the auxiliary `je`.

Yes, in poetry and older literature, clitics sometimes appear in unusual positions for rhythm, but don't do this in speech!

Use `se` for direct actions (I wash myself) and `si` for indirect actions (I bought myself a gift).

In the clitic cluster, yes. It follows the first word and precedes all other clitics.
