Astuces
Basic use of '〜に関する'
You can use this phrase to indicate what something is about or related to. It often follows a noun.
Form with nouns
It's typically used after a noun. For example, 政治 (せいじ - politics) + に関する.
Function as an adjective
When used before another noun, it acts like an adjective. So, 「〜に関するN」 means 'N concerning ~'.
Function as an adverb
If you want it to act as an adverb, you'd use 「〜に関して」 instead. This means 'concerning ~' or 'regarding ~'.
Formal tone
This phrase is quite formal. You'll hear it in news, reports, or business settings more often than in casual conversation.
Example: Research topic
日本の歴史に関する研究 (にほんのれきしにかんするけんきゅう)
Research concerning Japanese history.
Example: Questions about something
この件に関する質問はありますか? (このけんにかんするしつもんはありますか?)
Are there any questions regarding this matter?
Example: Information about someone
彼に関する情報は少ない (かれにかんするじょうほうはすくない)
There is little information related to him.
Don't confuse with 'について'
While similar, 「〜に関する」 is often more formal and can modify a noun directly. 「〜について」 is also 'about', but can be more general or less formal, often followed by a verb (e.g., 話す - to talk about).
Variations: '〜に関して' and '〜に関わる'
Remember 「〜に関して」 for adverbial use. Another similar phrase is 「〜に関わる」 (にかかわる), which means 'to be involved in' or 'to affect'.
