§ Using the Wrong Measure Word
When you're talking about windows, you need to use the right measure word. In Chinese, almost every noun needs a measure word. For 窗戶 (chuānghù), the most common and natural measure word is 扇 (shàn).

- 扇 (shàn) is a measure word used for things that can be opened and closed, like doors and windows.
A common mistake is to use a more general measure word like 個 (gè). While 個 (gè) is very versatile, it's not the most appropriate or natural choice for windows. Using 扇 (shàn) makes your Chinese sound much more fluent and correct.
這間房間有三扇窗戶。
This room has three windows. (Here, 扇 (shàn) is the correct measure word).
我需要打開一扇窗戶通風。
I need to open a window for ventilation. (Again, 扇 (shàn) is preferred).
§ Confusing 窗戶 (chuānghù) with 窗 (chuāng)
Sometimes learners might wonder if there's a difference between 窗戶 (chuānghù) and just 窗 (chuāng). While they both refer to a window, there's a subtle difference in usage you should be aware of.
- 窗戶 (chuānghù)
- This is the most common and complete term for 'window' as a physical object. Use it when you are talking about the entire window structure.
- 窗 (chuāng)
- This is often used in compound words or to refer to the 'window' in a more abstract sense, or as a single component of the window, like the window pane.
Think of 窗戶 (chuānghù) as the 'window' you interact with – you open it, close it, look out of it. 窗 (chuāng) on its own is less common in everyday conversation to refer to the whole window.
請關上窗戶。
Please close the window. (Refers to the entire window.)
窗外很漂亮。
Outside the window is very beautiful. (Here, 窗 (chuāng) is part of a phrase 窗外 (chuāngwài) 'outside the window').
§ Incorrect Verb Usage
You might also make mistakes with the verbs used with 窗戶 (chuānghù).
Opening a window: Use 開 (kāi).
天氣很熱，我想開窗戶。
It's hot, I want to open the window.
Closing a window: Use 關 (guān).
晚上很冷，請關窗戶。
It's cold at night, please close the window.
Looking out of a window: You would typically say 看窗外 (kàn chuāngwài) meaning 'look outside the window'.
他喜歡看窗外的風景。
He likes to look at the scenery outside the window.
