Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
In Azerbaijani, to say something 'must be' or 'can be' done, you attach the passive suffix first, then the modal suffix.
- Rule 1: Add passive suffix (-ıl/-il/-ul/-ül or -ın/-in/-un/-ün) to the verb stem first. Example: 'yaz' -> 'yazıl'.
- Rule 2: Add the modal suffix (-malı/-məli for 'must' or -a/-ə bilər for 'can') after the passive suffix.
- Rule 3: Use the negative suffix -ma/-mə before the modal suffix to say it 'must not be' done.

The 'L' Rule
Don't Forget the Passive!
Softening Commands
Formal 'Olunmaq'
Smart Tips
Switch from 'Siz bunu etməlisiniz' (You must do this) to 'Bu edilməlidir' (This must be done).
Check the last letter of the stem. If it's 'L', go with 'N'. If it's anything else, go with 'L'.
Break it down from right to left. The last part is the person/tense, the middle is the modal, and the first part is the passive.
Use '-a bilər' to ask if something is allowed in a passive way to be extra polite.
Pronúncia
Stress on Modals
In words like 'yazılmalıdır', the stress usually falls on the first syllable of the modal suffix '-mal'.
Softening of 'd'
In casual speech, the final '-dır' is often dropped or pronounced very softly as a short 'ı'.
Command/Rule
Bu edilməlidir! ↘
Falling intonation at the end signifies a firm rule or necessity.
Memorize It
Mnemonic
Remember 'P-M': Passive first, Modal second. You can't have a 'must' without the 'be' (passive) already attached to the verb.
Visual Association
Imagine a factory conveyor belt. The 'Verb' is the raw material. The first machine (Passive) shapes it into a finished product. The second machine (Modal) puts it in a box labeled 'MUST' or 'CAN'.
Rhyme
First add the 'ıl' to make it 'be', then add 'malı' for necessity!
Story
A boss walks into an empty office. He doesn't care WHO does the work, he just sees the tasks. He points at a letter and says 'Yazılmalı!' (Must be written). He points at a window and says 'Açılmalı!' (Must be opened). The passive modal is the language of the 'Task Master'.
Word Web
Desafio
Look around your room and name 3 things that 'must be done' using the passive modal (e.g., 'The bed must be made', 'The floor must be cleaned').
Notas culturais
Passive modals are extremely common in official Azerbaijani documents to maintain a neutral, impersonal tone. Using active voice can sometimes sound too aggressive or informal in a government setting.
When asking for something in a shop or restaurant, using a passive 'can it be done' form is considered very polite as it doesn't directly pressure the staff.
Many Azerbaijani proverbs use passive structures to express universal truths that 'must' or 'cannot' be changed.
The passive suffixes -ıl and -ın date back to Old Turkic (Orkhon inscriptions). The modal -malı is a later development in Oghuz Turkic languages.

Perguntas frequentes (8)
Both mean 'must be done'. 'Edilməlidir' is the passive of 'etmək', while 'olunmalıdır' is the passive of 'olmaq'. In modern Azerbaijani, 'olunmaq' is often used with nouns to form formal compound passives like 'təşkil olunmaq'.
Yes! You would say 'Mən görülməliyəm'. The passive suffix stays the same, but you change the personal ending at the very end.
This is a phonetic rule. If a verb stem ends in the letter 'L', the passive suffix changes from '-ıl' to '-ın' to make it easier to pronounce.
Generally, yes. '-malı' feels like a direct obligation (must), while 'lazımdır' feels like a necessity (it is needed).
You add the past auxiliary 'idi' after the modal: 'edilməli idi'.
Absolutely. Just add the question particle 'mi/mı' at the end: 'Bu kitab oxunmalıdırmi?' (Must this book be read?)
Yes, it becomes just '-n'. For example, 'oxu' (read) becomes 'oxunmaq' (to be read).
It's used in both! While more common in formal settings, you'll use it at home for chores like 'Paltarlar yuyulmalıdır' (The clothes must be washed).
