From Latin 'discrepare' ('to sound differently, to disagree'), from 'dis-' (expressing negation or reversal) + 'crepare' ('to rattle, to creak, to make a noise'). The term originally referred to sounds that were out of harmony or discordant. Over time, its meaning evolved metaphorically to describe a disagreement in opinions or views, much like sounds that do not blend well together. The Spanish verb 'discrepar' thus carries this historical sense of being 'out of tune' with another's thoughts or beliefs.
