Discourse markers like 'ju', 'väl', and 'nog' signal your attitude and shared knowledge, making your Swedish sound natural and native-like.

  • Use 'ju' when you assume the listener already knows the fact: 'Det är ju måndag!'
  • Use 'väl' to seek confirmation or express uncertainty: 'Du kommer väl på festen?'
  • Use 'nog' to express probability or personal opinion: 'Det regnar nog snart.'

Meanings

Discourse markers are small, uninflected words that do not change the literal meaning of a sentence but modify the speaker's stance, shared knowledge, or conversational flow.
