नीली कलम

You use this phrase exactly like you would in English. If you are at a shop, you ask for a नीली कलम. If you are in class and forgot yours, you ask a friend. Note that कलम is a feminine noun. This is why we use नीली instead of the masculine नीला. If you use the English loanword पेन (pen), it is usually treated as masculine. So you would say नीला पेन but नीली कलम. Grammar can be a bit of a trickster like that!

Use it whenever you need to be specific about ink color. This happens a lot in Indian administrative settings. Filling out a passport form? You need a नीली कलम. Writing a check? Reach for that नीली कलम. It is perfect for school, university, or the office. It is a safe, neutral phrase that works everywhere from a high-end boardroom to a tiny street-side kiosk.

Do not use this if you are signing certain legal documents that specifically require black ink. Also, avoid it if you are a teacher grading papers. In India, teachers traditionally use red ink. If you ask for a नीली कलम to grade a test, your students might think you are being too nice! Also, in very casual Hinglish, just saying blue pen is often more common than the pure Hindi version.

In the Indian education system, the transition from pencil to नीली कलम is a rite of passage. It usually happens around the 4th or 5th grade. It signifies that you are growing up. Blue ink is preferred over black because it is easier to distinguish an original signature from a black-and-white photocopy. There is a deep nostalgia associated with the 'Saino Softek' or 'Reynolds' blue pens among Indian millennials.

The most common variation is नीला पेन (neela pen). While कलम is beautiful and poetic, पेन is what you will hear 90% of the time on the streets. You might also hear सयाही (syahi) for ink. If someone asks for a बॉल पेन (ball pen), they are usually looking for a blue one by default.
