Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Croatian, certain prepositions always 'lock' the following noun into a specific case, regardless of the verb or action.

  • Use Genitive after 'bez' (without) and 'osim' (except), like 'bez šećera'.
  • Use Dative after 'zahvaljujući' (thanks to) and 'unatoč' (despite), like 'zahvaljujući tebi'.
  • Use Instrumental after 'u vezi s' (regarding), like 'u vezi s poslom'.
Preposition 🧲 + Noun (Fixed Case Ending) 🧩

Meanings

Fixed prepositional phrases are combinations of words where the preposition dictates exactly which grammatical case the following noun or pronoun must take. Unlike some prepositions that change case based on movement or location, these are static and predictable.

1

Exclusion

Using phrases to indicate something is left out or is an exception.

“Svi su došli osim Marka.”

“Mogu ići bez tebe.”

2

Causality & Gratitude

Expressing that something happened because of or despite something else.

“Zahvaljujući kiši, trava je zelena.”

“Unatoč problemima, uspjeli smo.”

3

Substitution

Indicating that one thing is taking the place of another.

“Pijem čaj umjesto kave.”

“Došao je on umjesto brata.”

4

Relation

Connecting a topic or subject to a discussion or action.

“Zovem vas u vezi s oglasom.”

“Pišem u vezi s projektom.”

The 'A' Rule

For masculine nouns in the Genitive (after bez, osim, umjesto), just add an 'a' to the end. It works 90% of the time!
⚠️

Watch the 'a' in 'sa'

Don't use 'sa' everywhere. Only use it if the next word starts with s, z, š, ž or if it's 'sa mnom'.
