Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Mastering multiple dependent clauses allows you to express complex relationships between ideas using logical nesting and precise punctuation.

  • Parallel dependence: Two clauses relate to the same main verb. Example: 'Rekao je da dolazi i da kasni.'
  • Nested dependence: One dependent clause modifies another. Example: 'Znam da misliš da griješim.'
  • Punctuation: Always use commas between clauses unless they are connected by 'i', 'pa', 'te', 'ni', 'niti'.
[Main Clause] + , + [Dep. Clause 1] + , + [Dep. Clause 2]

Meanings

The process of attaching two or more dependent clauses to a single main clause, either in a parallel fashion or as a chain (nested).

1

Sequential/Nested Subordination

A chain where the second dependent clause depends on the first dependent clause.

“Rekao je da će doći ako bude imao vremena.”

“Mislim da je važno da razumiješ kako sustav radi.”

2

Parallel Subordination

Two or more dependent clauses that both relate directly to the main clause.

“Pitao me tko sam i što želim.”

“Vidio sam da pada kiša i da su ljudi tužni.”

Structure of Multiple Subordination

Type Logical Structure Conjunction Examples
Parallel Main + [Dep 1 + Dep 2] da... i da..., tko... i što...
Nested (Chained) Main + [Dep 1 + (Dep 2)] da... jer..., ako... da...
Interrupted Main [Dep 1] Main + Dep 2 Onaj koji... zna da...

🎯

Vary your conjunctions

Instead of using 'da' repeatedly, use 'kako', 'što', or 'gdje' to make the sentence sound more natural and less repetitive.
⚠️

The 'i' Rule

Never put a comma before 'i' (and) if it is connecting two dependent clauses of the same type. It's the most common mistake for advanced learners.
💡

Read Aloud

If you run out of breath before finishing the sentence, it's probably too complex. Break it into two!

Smart Tips

Check if you can change the second one to 'kako' to sound more like a native speaker.

Znam da on zna da ja znam. Znam da on zna kako ja to razumijem.

Identify the main verb first. If you can't find it easily, your nesting is too deep.

Čovjek koji je došao jučer jer je htio vidjeti psa koji je pobjegao... Čovjek koji je došao jučer jer je htio vidjeti psa koji je pobjegao, konačno je stigao.

Delete the comma. It feels wrong to English speakers, but it's the law in Croatian.

Rekao je da me voli, i da će ostati. Rekao je da me voli i da će ostati.

تلفظ

/mi.slim da / (pause) /tre.ba.mo i.ći/

Comma Pause

In long sentences, a slight pause (rising intonation) occurs before the comma of a dependent clause.

نکات فرهنگی

Croatian speakers value precision in formal writing. Using multiple clauses correctly is a sign of high education (visoko obrazovanje).

In informal speech, Dalmatians often shorten 'da' or use 'ča' (in islands), simplifying complex structures.

Croatian syntax is rooted in Proto-Slavic, which used simple parataxis (placing sentences side by side).

Yes, but it sounds repetitive. Try replacing one with `kako` or `što` if possible.

Use a comma if they are not connected by `i`, `pa`, `te`, `ni`, or `niti`.

Yes, but usually only with 2 levels of nesting. 3 or more is mostly for writing.

`Zato što` is slightly more emphatic and can sometimes start a sentence, whereas `jer` cannot.

No, Croatian word order remains flexible, but the clitics (like `je`, `li`, `se`) must still follow the second-position rule within their own clause.

Because it requires managing multiple logical layers and perfect punctuation simultaneously.
