Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Romanian, the definite article 'the' is attached to the end of the noun as a suffix instead of standing alone.

  • Masculine nouns ending in a consonant add '-ul': 'om' (man) becomes 'omul' (the man).
  • Feminine nouns ending in '-ă' replace it with '-a': 'fată' (girl) becomes 'fata' (the girl).
  • Neuter nouns ending in a consonant add '-ul': 'scaun' (chair) becomes 'scaunul' (the chair).
Noun + Suffix = The Noun (e.g., 🍎 + ul = 🍎ul)

The definite article is used to specify a particular noun, equivalent to the English 'the'. Unlike English, it is an enclitic, meaning it is physically attached to the end of the noun.
