Contexto cultural
Estonians are known for being 'metsarahvas' (forest people). Fire and smoke were vital for survival and communication in the woods, which is why so many idioms involve these elements. Similar to Estonia, Finns use 'Ei savua ilman tulta'. The shared Baltic-Finnic heritage makes the usage almost identical in social contexts. Latvians say 'Kur dūmi, tur uguns'. Being neighbors, the logic of the 'smoke signal' is deeply embedded in the entire Baltic region's folklore. In Russia, 'Нет дыма без огня' is extremely common. Due to historical proximity, many Estonians are equally comfortable with the Russian equivalent.
