00:00

the problem that a lot of people have

00:01

with their career is that it can

00:02

actually be a source of stress cuz you

00:03

know as human beings we like the idea of

00:05

certainty but not knowing what actually

00:06

we want to do with our career or whether

00:08

we're really going to enjoy it can

00:09

actually be profoundly uncertain and

00:11

even if you know what you want to do and

00:12

what you enjoy there's actually no

00:13

guarantee that you're going to be able

00:14

to turn that into a well-paying and

00:16

successful career which again adds to

00:17

the stress and so that translates into

00:19

this career anxiety that a lot of us can

00:21

feel a lot of worries and apprehensions

00:23

and self-doubts about whether we're

00:24

actually on the right path and whether

00:25

we're actually truly fulfilled in our

00:27

current jobs now a little while back I

00:28

spoke to a professor of Behavioral

00:30

Science Grace Lorden who has written a

00:32

book all about how to find and succeed

00:34

in a career that you actually enjoy and

00:36

so in this video we're going to talk

00:37

about seven evidence-based techniques

00:38

that you can use to move more towards a

00:40

career that you actually enjoy tip one

00:42

task over title I've noticed a lot of

00:44

times when I talk to people about

00:46

careers they're attached to a label so

00:48

they want to be a Trader or an

00:49

investment banker or they want to be a

00:50

doctor or they're attached to a

00:53

lifestyle so they want to be able to go

00:54

on a particular vacation or buy a

00:55

particular car and kind of think big

00:57

journey is really thinking about if I

00:59

were to be a doctor if I were to be a

01:01

Trader what would be the tasks that I

01:03

would be doing on a day-to-day basis and

01:05

would I ultimately end up enjoying those

01:07

tasks so the activities that I'm going

01:09

to spend the time in now there's so many

01:10

studies from the field of psychology

01:12

that show that a lot of your success in

01:14

a career actually comes down to your

01:16

happiness in that particular job and

01:18

what Professor Lorden is saying is that

01:19

if you focus too much on the title of

01:21

the job you can actually forget about

01:22

what the day-to-day of the thing

01:24

actually involves now this might sound

01:25

super boring and obvious but actually

01:26

I've seen so many people and I I used to

01:28

fall into this trap myself as well of

01:29

thinking that like the career title of

01:31

like oh would be cool to be a

01:32

neurosurgeon it would be cool to be a

01:33

plastic surgeon but it was only after I

01:35

started doing some research into this

01:37

career stuff that I realize hang on

01:38

instead of worrying about the title I

01:40

should actually be thinking about what

01:41

will my day-to-day job involve as a

01:43

neurosurgeon is it actually as glamorous

01:45

as the thing potentially sounds and this

01:47

relates to an idea from Tim Urban called

01:49

pixel Theory which is the idea that life

01:51

is a picture but we live in an

01:52

individual pixel of that picture so

01:55

basically what that means is that we

01:56

might think of our life as being this

01:57

broad brush stroke beautiful painting of

01:59

like you know what's our job title what

02:01

are we doing for fun what are our kid

02:02

like this big kind of high level thing

02:05

but actually a lot of your happiness is

02:06

governed by the dayto day like what does

02:08

your calendar look like on a given day

02:10

and so when it comes to finding a job

02:11

that you actually love finding a career

02:12

that you actually love thinking about

02:14

the day-to-day nature of the tasks

02:16

rather than the broad abstract nature of

02:18

the job title is potentially one way to

02:19

help with that tip number two visualize

02:21

your me plus now this was actually one

02:23

of my favorite ideas from the book the

02:24

idea that you should visualize what me

02:27

plus is going to look like and me plus

02:28

is basically me or you but it's like the
