Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Bulgarian verbs come in pairs: use Perfective for finished, one-time results and Imperfective for habits, processes, or repeated actions.
- Use Imperfective for habits: 'Всеки ден пия кафе' (Every day I drink coffee).
- Use Perfective for completed goals: 'Изпих кафето' (I drank [up] the coffee).
- Look for keywords: 'винаги' (always) needs Imperfective; 'изведнъж' (suddenly) needs Perfective.
Meanings
Verb aspect in Bulgarian describes *how* an action happens—whether it is a completed event with a result (Perfective) or an ongoing, repeated, or habitual process (Imperfective).
Completion and Result
Focuses on the end-point or the total fulfillment of an action.
“Написах писмото.”
“Купих хляб.”
Habitual or Repeated Actions
Actions that happen regularly, many times, or as a general routine.
“Пиша писма всяка седмица.”

Ongoing Process
Focuses on the duration of the action without regard for its completion.

Smart Tips
Stop! Use the Imperfective form. Perfective and 'always' are like oil and water.
Look for a verb with a prefix like 'из-' or 'на-'.
Ask yourself: do I want to *be doing* it or *finish* it? Usually, you want the Perfective.
Use Imperfective for the background (weather, feelings) and Perfective for the actions that happen.

Herausforderung
Look at your to-do list. For every item you haven't done, use the Imperfective (e.g., 'Ще уча'). For every item you finished today, use the Perfective (e.g., 'Научих').
Kulturelle Hinweise
When offering food, Bulgarians use Imperfective ('Заповядайте, хапнете' - though 'хапнете' is a Perfective imperative used politely for a single act).
Using Imperfective for 'I am coming' (Идвам) is culturally flexible; it might mean 'I am leaving my house now' or 'I will be there in 20 minutes'.
Slavic aspect developed from Proto-Indo-European 'Aktionsart', where prefixes changed the 'way' an action was performed.

FAQ (8)
There is no single rule, but 'на-' and 'по-' are very common. You must learn the pairs as vocabulary.
Only in subordinate clauses (after 'да', 'ако', etc.). You can't say 'Аз напиша' as a standalone sentence.
Often, but not always. It also covers habits like 'I smoke', which isn't '-ing'.
Prefixes often add a specific meaning (e.g., 'про-' means 'through', 'из-' means 'out/completely').
The suffix '-ва-' (as in 'купувам', 'казвам') is the most reliable marker.
Most do, but some (like 'съм' - to be) are only Imperfective, and some are only Perfective.
Use the Imperfective. 'Не прави това!' (Don't do that!)
No. Tense is time (past/present); Aspect is the 'type' of action (finished/ongoing).
