In Greek cafes, it is standard practice to place your phone on the table. This makes 'Πού είναι το τηλέφωνο;' a common question when people stand up to leave, as they scan the table for their belongings. If you ask 'Πού είναι το τηλέφωνο;' in a Greek home, the host will often not just point to it but bring it to you, reflecting the high value placed on serving guests. Younger Greeks almost exclusively use 'κινητό' (mobile). Using 'τηλέφωνο' can sometimes sound slightly more formal or refer specifically to a landline among Gen Z. Historically, kiosks were the only place to find a phone. While they are now mostly for snacks and magazines, older Greeks might still associate the question with looking for a kiosk.
