Linking ideas is all about relationships. Every connector has a specific job. Some add information.
Some show contrast. Others explain a reason. Think of them as traffic signs for your listener.
They tell the listener where your sentence is going. If you use și, you are adding more. If you use dar, you are changing direction.
The grammar logic is straightforward. You usually place the connector between two words. Or you place it between two full sentences.
You don't need to change the word's form. They never change for gender or number. They are stable and reliable friends.
Just drop them in and keep talking. It is like adding a bridge between two islands.

When Not To Use It

They mean the same thing. Pick one and stick with it. Avoid using pentru că at the very start of a conversation.
It usually needs a sentence before it to make sense. If someone asks Why?, then you can start with it. Otherwise, keep it in the middle.
Finally, don't use these to link unrelated things.

Common Mistakes

Forgetting the comma before dar is the most common error. In English, we are lazy with commas. In Romanian, that comma is mandatory. Another mistake is using iar incorrectly. Learners often think iar is just another și. It isn't. Iar is for contrasting two different subjects. For example:
I eat, while he drinks.
Many people also confuse sau and ori. Good news: they are mostly the same! But don't use them both at once. A funny mistake is using deci too much. Some people use it as a filler word, like um or like. Try to avoid this habit early. It can make you sound a bit indecisive. Also, watch out for că vs pentru că. Că means that, while pentru că means because.

Let's look at dar versus iar. This is a classic Romanian struggle. Dar shows a contradiction.

Iar shows a parallel contrast.
