The Soft Mark (Mäkčeň)

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

The mäkčeň (ˇ) is a small hook placed above letters to soften their sound, turning hard consonants into soft, palatalized versions.

  • Place the hook (ˇ) above consonants like 'd', 't', 'n', 'l' to make them soft: 'd' becomes 'ď'.
  • When 'i' or 'í' follows a soft consonant, the hook is often omitted in writing but the sound remains.
  • The letter 'c' becomes 'č' (like 'ch' in 'church') and 's' becomes 'š' (like 'sh' in 'ship').
Consonant + ˇ = Softened Sound (e.g., d + ˇ = ď)
