Dobrú chuť

Enjoy your meal

Bedeutung

A polite wish said before eating.

🌍

Kultureller Hintergrund

It is considered rude to start eating before everyone has their food and the 'Dobrú chuť' has been said. This is especially true for the first course (usually soup). If you enter a kitchen or breakroom where someone is eating, you MUST say 'Dobrú chuť'. It is a standard polite acknowledgement of their presence. In some villages, the meal might be preceded by a short prayer, followed immediately by 'Dobrú chuť'. In trendy cafes, you might hear the English 'Enjoy!', but sticking to 'Dobrú chuť' is always preferred and shows better integration.

💡

The 'Podobne' Trick

If you are eating at the same time as someone else, the easiest response is 'Ďakujem, podobne' (Thank you, likewise).

⚠️

Don't be the first!

If you are a guest, wait for the host to say it first. It's a sign of respect.
