The apostrophe in Ukrainian acts as a 'stop' sign, preventing the preceding consonant from softening before certain vowels.
- Use after labial consonants (б, п, в, м, ф) before я, ю, є, ї: 'п'ять' (five).
- Use after 'р' at the end of a syllable: 'бур'ян' (weed).
- Use after prefixes ending in a consonant: 'під'їзд' (entrance).
