Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

The apostrophe in Ukrainian acts as a 'stop' sign, preventing the preceding consonant from softening before certain vowels.

  • Use after labial consonants (б, п, в, м, ф) before я, ю, є, ї: 'п'ять' (five).
  • Use after 'р' at the end of a syllable: 'бур'ян' (weed).
  • Use after prefixes ending in a consonant: 'під'їзд' (entrance).
Consonant + ' + я/ю/є/ї

Meanings

The apostrophe is a punctuation mark used to indicate that the preceding consonant is not palatalized (softened) and that the following vowel represents a 'j' sound.
