In cities like Athens and Thessaloniki, 'Δεν έχω χρόνο' is a constant refrain. It marks the transition from the traditional long lunch breaks to a more 'Western' 9-to-5 (or 9-to-9) schedule. Refusing a guest's request with 'Δεν έχω χρόνο' is tricky. It's often followed by a promise to meet later to avoid appearing 'agrotikos' (rude/uncultured). During exam periods ('exetastiki'), students use this phrase to justify missing social events, often with a sense of shared suffering. While Greeks love the idea of 'slowly-slowly,' the reality of the economic climate means many hold two jobs, making 'Δεν έχω χρόνο' a very real, non-ironic statement.
