Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Finnish words follow a strict vowel rule: you cannot mix back vowels (a, o, u) with front vowels (ä, ö, y) in the same word.

  • Back vowels (a, o, u) stay together: talo + ssa = talossa.
  • Front vowels (ä, ö, y) stay together: metsä + ssä = metsässä.
  • Neutral vowels (e, i) are flexible and can appear with either group.
Word (Back) + Suffix (Back) OR Word (Front) + Suffix (Front)

Meanings

Vowel harmony is a phonological constraint where suffixes must match the vowel quality of the root word.

1

Suffix Selection

Determining which version of a suffix (e.g., -ssa/-ssä) to attach.

“Koulussa (in school)”

“Pöydässä (at the table)”

2

Compound Word Formation

The rule applies to the last part of a compound word.

“Tietokone (computer) -> tietokoneessa (in the computer)”
