Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Finnish words change their middle consonants from 'strong' to 'weak' when you add certain endings.

  • K disappears or becomes a V/J: 'puku' (suit) -> 'puvun' (of the suit).
  • P becomes V: 'kauppa' (shop) -> 'kaupan' (of the shop).
  • T becomes D: 'katu' (street) -> 'kadun' (of the street).
Strong Stem (KPT) + Ending = Weak Stem (V/D/Ø)
