Historically, 'državni posao' (a state office job) was the ultimate goal for many due to job security. Office work in Serbia is inseparable from coffee. It is common to spend the first 30 minutes of the workday drinking 'domaća kafa' (Turkish coffee) with colleagues. Many older offices in Serbia still have a 'socialist' aesthetic—heavy wooden desks and green plants. This is a contrast to the modern 'staklenac' (glass buildings) in New Belgrade. Serbians value social interaction at work. If you 'radite u kancelariji', you are expected to participate in birthdays and 'slava' celebrations held in the office.
