In Manila, 'hiya' is often used as a social lubricant to navigate the dense, crowded social networks of the city. The concept is similar ('ulaw'), but Tagalog speakers in the Visayas often use 'nahihiya' to sound more formal or 'Manila-style' polite. Second-generation Fil-Ams often struggle with 'hiya,' seeing it as a barrier to assertiveness, while their parents see it as a sign of good upbringing.
