It’s great for storytelling or gossiping about someone’s true intentions. If you see someone blushing but pretending they aren't, that is 掩饰. It fits well in emotional conversations or professional critiques.

Don't use it for physical objects like hiding your keys. For that, use 藏 (cáng). If you are literally putting a cloth over a birdcage, 掩饰 is the wrong word.
