Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Use 'er' + preposition to replace 'preposition + it/that' when referring to inanimate objects.
- Replace 'preposition + het/dat' with 'er + preposition' (e.g., 'erop' instead of 'op het').
- If the preposition starts with a vowel, use 'r' instead of 'er' (e.g., 'eraan' becomes 'eraan', but 'erop' stays 'erop').
- Split the 'er' and the preposition if the sentence structure requires emphasis or distance.
