Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
Causatives turn 'I do' into 'I make someone do', using suffixes like -dir or -t to delegate actions.
- Add -dir (or -t) to the verb root to create the causative form: 'yaz' (write) becomes 'yazdır' (make write).
- If the original verb is transitive, the person doing the action (agent) takes the Dative case (-a/-ə).
- If the original verb is intransitive, the person doing the action (agent) takes the Accusative case (-ı/-i/-u/-ü).
Meanings

Smart Tips
Always use the causative. Don't say 'I cut my hair' unless you actually held the scissors yourself.
Check if the Azerbaijani verb is transitive. If you can 'verb' a 'thing', use the Dative for the person.
Don't confuse it with 'is'. If there is a tense marker after it, it's definitely causative.
Use the causative to describe how things make you feel.

Notes culturelles
In Azerbaijani culture, using the causative voice for services (like tea service or cleaning) is standard and not considered rude, as it reflects the reality of professional roles.
In Baku's corporate world, managers use the causative to describe team achievements, emphasizing their role as the 'causer' of the success.
In some southern regions, double causatives are used more frequently to show extreme politeness or indirectness.
The causative suffixes -dir and -t originate from Old Turkic '-tur' and '-t'.

FAQ (8)
`-dir` is the general suffix for consonant-ending roots. `-t` is used for vowel-ending roots and roots ending in 'r' or 'l'.
Yes, but it sounds very strong, like 'to force'. The causative suffix is much more natural for everyday requests.
Use `Evi təmizlətdim`. 'Ev' takes the Accusative because it is the object.
Because 'yazmaq' is transitive (needs an object) and 'gülmək' is intransitive (doesn't need an object).
Yes, it is the causative of 'bişmək' (to be cooked). It means 'to cook something'.
Yes, like `yaz-dır-t-maq`. This means having someone else make a third person do the action.
No, the causative suffix comes before the tense marker. You can have causative in past, present, or future.
Very much so. It is used to describe administrative actions and delegation of duties.
