Sin previo aviso

In Spain, 'el preaviso' is a legal requirement in labor contracts. If an employee leaves without giving the 15-day notice, the company can deduct those days from their final paycheck. Conversely, if a company fires someone (in certain cases), they must also provide notice or pay for those days. While 'sin previo aviso' is used formally, in casual Mexican Spanish, you will often hear 'de la nada' or 'así nomás' to describe sudden events. However, in news reports about 'narcobloqueos' or sudden road closures, 'sin previo aviso' is the standard term. Argentines might use 'de prepo' (by force/suddenly) for social situations where someone forces a change without warning, but 'sin previo aviso' remains the standard for administrative issues like bank changes or utility cuts. In many countries, showing up at someone's house 'sin previo aviso' is becoming less acceptable in cities but remains common in smaller towns where 'puertas abiertas' (open doors) culture is still prevalent.
