In Croatian, some prepositions change the noun's case depending on whether you are moving toward a place or already there.
- Use Accusative for motion/destination: 'Idem u školu' (I am going into the school).
- Use Locative for static location with 'u/na': 'U školi sam' (I am in the school).
- Use Instrumental for static location with 'pod/nad/pred/među': 'Pred kućom sam' (I am in front of the house).

Smart Tips
Always reach for the Accusative case immediately after 'u' or 'na'.
Think of the Instrumental case as the 'environment' case. If you are *in* that environment, use -om/-em.
Always use 'na' + Locative for location and 'na' + Accusative for travel.
If the movement doesn't cross a boundary (you stay inside), use the Locative.
Prononciation
Prepositional Stress
Short prepositions like 'u' and 'na' often lose their stress and 'lean' on the following word (proclitics).
Vowel Linking
When 'u' is followed by a word starting with 'u', they may merge into a slightly longer 'u'.
Rising on Destination
Ideš u grad? ↑
Asking about a destination usually has a rising tone on the noun.
Mémorise-le
Moyen mnémotechnique
Remember: 'A' for Action (Accusative) and 'L/I' for Location (Locative/Instrumental).
Association visuelle
Imagine an arrow hitting a box for Accusative (motion toward) and a heavy dot sitting inside or under the box for Locative/Instrumental (static position).
Rhyme
If you're moving to the place, Accusative is the case. If you're staying where you are, Locative/Instrumental is the star!
Story
A cat runs 'u kuću' (Accusative) because it's raining. Now the cat is 'u kući' (Locative) and sleeping 'pod stolom' (Instrumental). It sees a mouse 'pred rupom' (Instrumental) and jumps 'na njega' (Accusative).
Word Web
Défi
Look around your room. Pick 5 objects and say where you are putting them (Accusative) and where they are now (Locative/Instrumental).
Notes culturelles
Croatians are very precise about 'u' vs 'na'. Using 'u' for an island (e.g., 'u Hvaru') implies you are in the town, while 'na Hvaru' implies the whole island.
In Zagreb (Kajkavian influence), people sometimes use 'na' where standard Croatian uses 'u', especially for events.
In Dalmatia, you might hear 'u' used more frequently for locations where 'na' is standard, but in formal writing, the distinction is strictly maintained.
These case distinctions date back to Proto-Slavic and are shared by most Slavic languages (Russian, Polish, Czech).

FAQ (8)
It depends on the verb. If you are moving *into* something, use Accusative. If you are *already inside*, use Locative.
'Gdje' means 'Where' (static location), while 'Kamo' means 'Where to' (destination). Use 'Gdje' with Locative/Instrumental and 'Kamo' with Accusative.
No, only a small group: `u, na, pod, nad, pred, među`. Most others, like `iz` or `od`, always take one specific case.
Both! 'Idem na more' means going to the seaside/coast. 'Skačem u more' means jumping into the water itself.
This is just a rule of the language. The prepositions `u` and `na` use Locative for location, but `pod, nad, pred, među` use Instrumental.
Yes, 'u' + Accusative is used for days of the week (u ponedjeljak) and specific times (u pet sati).
People will usually understand you, but it will sound like you are saying 'I am going inside the school' while you are already there. It sounds 'broken'.
Some verbs of motion like 'šetati' (to walk) can take Locative if you are walking *within* a space rather than *to* a space.

到 (dào) / 在 (zài)
