Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds
In Croatian, the verb 'to be' has short 'clitic' forms that must never start a sentence.
- Use short forms (sam, si, je...) for standard statements: 'Ja sam sretan' (I am happy).
- Never start a sentence with a short form; use the long form 'Jesam' or reorder.
- Short forms usually attach to the second position in the sentence.

These are unstressed, shortened versions of the verb 'biti' (to be) used to connect subjects to predicates.
