Verbal Negation with 'ne-'

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

In Latvian, you make a verb negative by simply adding the prefix 'ne-' directly to the front of the verb.

  • Attach 'ne-' to the start of the verb: 'ēdu' (I eat) becomes 'neēdu' (I do not eat).
  • The prefix 'ne-' is written as one word with the verb, no space allowed.
  • This rule applies to almost all verb tenses in Latvian, making it very consistent.
