Offering a cold, wet face towel to a guest is a sign of deep respect and hospitality, especially in the hot season. Face towels are common items in 'Hsun-kyway' (offering ceremonies) as they are practical for monks' daily hygiene. It is considered impolite to use a face towel to wipe anything below the waist due to the cultural hierarchy of the body. In Yangon/Mandalay, high-end 'wet towels' in plastic packaging are often called by the English name 'Wet Tissue' but serve the same cultural role as the traditional face towel.
