The Renarrative Mood for Distancing and Authority

Grammar Rule in 30 Seconds

Use the Renarrative to report information you didn't witness personally, signaling distance and lack of personal responsibility for the truth.

  • Use the -l participle (минало деятелно причастие) to form the core of the verb phrase.
  • Drop the auxiliary 'съм' (to be) in the 3rd person to distinguish it from the Perfect tense.
  • Apply it to all tenses to show the source of information is external, not personal observation.
Verb Participle (-л) + (Auxiliary 'съм' - 3rd Person) = 🗣️ Reported Truth

Meanings

The Renarrative mood is a grammatical category in Bulgarian used to indicate that the speaker was not a direct witness to the event being described. It shifts the responsibility for the truth of the statement to another source.

1

Neutral Reporting

Relaying information from news, history, or third-party accounts without adding personal bias.

“Цар Симеон Велики починал през 927 година.”

“Според новините, цените били паднали.”

2

Distancing/Doubt

Subtly hinting that the speaker does not necessarily believe the information or wants to avoid being blamed if it's false.

“Тя твърди, че не била взела парите.”

“Казаха ми, че проектът бил готов, но се съмнявам.”

3

Narrative/Folkloric

Used in storytelling, especially fairy tales, where the events are mythical or from the distant past.

“Имало едно време един цар.”

“Змеят бил отвлякъл принцесата.”

4

Admirative (Surprise)

Expressing sudden realization or surprise about a fact that was true all along but just discovered.

“Ама ти си бил много умен!”

“О, тя била тук!”

⚠️

Don't Overuse It

If you saw it yourself, use the Aorist. Using the Renarrative for things you witnessed makes you sound like you have amnesia or are being sarcastic.
💬

Journalistic Safety

Always use the Renarrative when quoting someone indirectly in a professional setting to remain neutral.
💡

Admirative Surprise

Remember that 'Ти си бил тук!' with the 'си' means 'Oh, you were here (and I just noticed)!', not 'They told me you were here.'

Smart Tips

Immediately translate it as 'apparently' or 'they say' to get the right meaning.

Той е дошъл. (He has come.) Той дошъл. (Apparently, he came.)

Use the Renarrative to show you are relaying what your parents told you.

Когато бях малък, паднах от дърво. (I remember falling.) Когато съм бил малък, съм паднал от дърво. (They told me I fell.)

Use the Renarrative form but KEEP the auxiliary 'e/си/съм'. This is the Admirative.

Ти си много добър. (You are very good - simple fact.) Ти си бил много добър! (Wow, you are actually very good!)

Use the Renarrative for the author's claims to maintain academic distance.

Авторът казва, че проблемът е сериозен. Авторът твърди, че проблемът бил сериозен.

자주 묻는 질문 (8)

Dropping the `e` is the grammatical signal that you didn't see the event. If you keep it, you are using the Perfect tense, which implies you vouch for the result.

Yes, if you didn't see them. For example, if a colleague tells you the coffee is finished, you can tell another colleague: `Кафето свършило`.

No, it is unique to the Balkan Slavic group (Bulgarian and Macedonian). Russian, Polish, and Czech do not have this mood.

It's used when you report something that was already reported to you. It uses an extra `бил`, like `Той бил бил казал`.

Use the Renarrative of the future: `Щяло да вали`.

It's not rude, but it can make you sound like you are claiming to be a witness to things you couldn't have seen, which sounds strange or arrogant.

Yes, you add `не` before the verb: `Той не дошъл` (He reportedly didn't come).

Yes, when talking about what your previous company achieved or what others said about your work.
